SERAG - Southern Estuarine Rehabilitation Action Group

About Us

We are a community-based environmental organisation focused on the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of estuarine ecosystems. Estuaries are dynamic environments where rivers meet the sea and are critical for biodiversity, water quality, flood control, fisheries, recreation, and community well-being. In South Africa, estuaries are under pressure from urban growth, altered freshwater flow, pollution and habitat degradation, making community action and informed management essential for their long-term resilience.

Estuarine rehabilitation efforts involve removing invasive plants, restoring indigenous vegetation, managing water flow and mouth dynamics, monitoring ecological health, and engaging local communities and partners. These activities help revive natural ecological functions and support wildlife, including important bird and fish species.

SERAG works with local government, scientific advisors, conservation partners, volunteers and donors to plan and implement strategic restoration efforts that improve water quality and biodiversity while also fostering environmental awareness and stewardship within communities.

  • Our Mission

SERAG is dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of estuarine environments through ecological restoration, community involvement, and sustainable partnerships. We aim to protect vital wetland habitats that support biodiversity and provide ecosystem services for surrounding communities.

    • Restore degraded estuarine habitats
    • Remove invasive vegetation and promote indigenous plant growth
    • Support science-based estuary management planning
    • Collaborate with local municipalities and stakeholders
    • Promote environmental education
    • Secure sustainable funding for long-term conservation
  • Our Vision

Healthy, resilient estuaries that support wildlife, enrich communities, and thrive despite environmental pressures. Starting with the Great Brak Estuary but hoping to continue to other estuaries in the Southern Cape.

  • Who We Are

SERAG is a community-driven non-profit action group working to restore and protect estuarine environments - such as the Great Brak Estuary and surrounding coastal wetlands - through conservation projects, volunteering and partnerships with local government. (mosselbay.gov.za)

WHY ESTUARIES MATTER

Estuaries are biodiversity hotspots that:

  • Provide habitat for birds, fish, and unique plant species
  • Filter and improve water quality
  • Support local livelihoods and recreation
  • Act as natural buffers against flooding

What We Do

  • We restore degraded estuaries and wetlands.
  • We collaborate with local authorities and communities.
