What is the AquaTroll? (and why does it matter?)
You might have heard SERAG mention the AquaTroll - but what is it? No, it isn’t a troll that lives under a bridge… or is it?
In simple terms, the AquaTroll is a water quality monitoring device that sits in the estuary and continuously collects data about what’s happening beneath the surface.
Because what we see with our eyes only tells part of the story.
The AquaTroll measures things like:
- Oxygen levels
- Salinity
- Temperature
- Other key indicators of ecosystem health
And this is where it gets really powerful - this data gives real, scientific insight into whether the estuary is actually healthy or not.
For example, one of the biggest myths around the Great Brak Estuary is that it’s fine when the mouth is closed for long periods. But the AquaTroll data shows that when the estuary stays open, the system is significantly healthier.
So instead of guessing or relying on outdated assumptions, SERAG can use real-time data to:
- Track changes in the estuary
- Support better decision-making
- Push for management that actually reflects what the ecosystem needs
It’s basically giving the estuary a voice.
Because once you have the data, you can’t ignore it.
